Recently, I was faced with the challenge of fixing my GPU, which had become stuck at a speed of 139 MHz. Initially, it had been running at 100MHz; however – inexplicably – this unexpectedly increased by 1!
It was a rather perplexing circumstance indeed. Fortunately, I had one of NVIDIA’s renowned GTX 1080 cards available to me so that process couldn’t have been too arduous.
Step 1: Check If You Have a Voltage Problem
If your GPU isn’t working, then it must be getting insufficient voltage. To confirm this theory, we shall investigate how increasing the provided voltage can potentially unlock higher clock speeds from an otherwise stuck GPU.
We will utilize AMD’s Precision Boost proudly built-in utility for our investigation; all that is required is accessing it through AMD’s proprietary control center application. If you do not possess such software, don’t fret – there are many on the web which offer similar functionality! When utilizing any of these utilities, simply ensure that ‘Precision Boost’ is enabled before continuing onward with the guide – this will expedite success at unlocking frequency potentials and allow users to gain access to higher clockspeeds when their GPUs are malfunctioning!
Step 2: Check the Power Cable
Make sure that the cables you’re using with your GPU are able to deliver a sufficient amount of power. Otherwise, it could lead to complications.
Loosen up any obstructions and ensure that the cables connecting to your graphics card and power supply are entirely free from kinks or twists before plugging them in again.
Step 3: Double-Check that the GPU is Cool
To be sure, we can’t stress enough the importance of ensuring that your system remains cool. If temperatures rise too much or remain at one level for an extended period of time, it could potentially lead to damage.
If any device within your PC consistently grows hot, consider replacing it – don’t take chances with essential components!
Step 4: Update Your Driver
Now that you’ve unlocked the full potential of your GPU and set it to a higher frequency, you must update your graphics driver. Do this by following these easy steps:
- Ensure you’re logged into your device manufacturer’s website. If not, then click here!
- Navigate to System Software > Driver – or navigate through various tabs until locating ‘towards the top’ for an option; this usually corresponds with NVIDIA (Nvidia). Click on their entry to find out what type of latest drivers are most up-to-date.
Step 5: Remove Any Third-Party Apps from Your CPU
If the processor frequency stays at or near 139MHz after disabling all overclocking apps, uninstalling third-party software and drivers from your system may be necessary.
It is possible that an app you are currently running could be limiting the speed of your CPU. If this proves true, removing it should resolve any concerns! Some common applications that may hamper performance include:
